Hello,
This first week back seems to have flown by! We started the week with an exciting Science investigation. We made Oobleck and made observations about how it behaves as a solid and a liquid. We are now starting a new topic in science - 'Rocks'. The children have really engaged with our new geography topic, 'Rivers', and had a great lesson using atlases to locate world rivers. They also acted out the processes of erosion and transportation... We had some brilliant boulder rolling along the floor! Today in D.T., we started making our products to sell on our class stall at the Christmas fayre which is 3 weeks today! We really hope to see lots of you there. Next week, we are starting a new topic in Maths - Multiplication and Division. On Monday after school, I will be putting out the sign-up sheets for parents' meetings. These will be held on Monday 21st November and Thursday 24th November. Please do sign up for a slot - I'd love to see as many of you as possible to discuss how your child has settled into year 4, how they are getting on now and set some targets for the year ahead. If you would prefer a phone call, please let me know. If you do not come into school to collect your child, please ring the office and they can let you know which slots are available. Have a great weekend! As I write this week's blog, I am unfortunately sitting at home unwell and unable to be in school because of this. There has been a lot of illness in school this term so I do hope everyone manages to stay well for the half term break.
Just a quick update from me because I want to say how proud I am of the children for setting up and running their 'Museum of mystery objects' on Monday afternoon. Every class came to visit and had something positive to say, and Ash Class did a great job of explaining all about their chosen curiosities. This week, welcomed Mr Hunt and Miss Wallis into our class. They will joining us again after half term and then returning in January as they undertake their teaching placements as part of their PGCE course. We look forward to working with them. Next half term has lots of exciting things in store including learning about rivers in geography (fingers crossed the weather will hold out so we can visit our river!), investigating rocks in science and lots of other brilliant things. Keep up the reading and times tables practise over half term and see you afterwards. Have a great week. Miss Radbourne We've had a great day today celebrating all things harvest and Autumn. It began with a fab selection of costumes this morning, followed by a lovely celebration in church during which the children were excellently behaved and sung beautifully. Thank you for your generous donations of food also. This afternoon, we continued our harvest theme with some still life sketching of apples, conkers and Autumn leaves. Have a look at some of the photos below.
Next week, we've got a busy week coming up as we enter the last week of this half term. On Monday, the children will be the curators of their very own 'Museum of mystery objects'. In English, they will be writing biographies about some (fictional) famous record-breakers! We'll be finishing off our 'Addition and Subtraction' unit in Maths and working hard in History on our end of unit task answering the question 'How did the Romans change Britain?' Have a great weekend. Miss Radbourne As I'm writing this, I'm reflecting on a really brilliant Friday afternoon today.
We have recently joined Tiverton museum as school members, with huge thanks to FONTS for funding this. As part of this membership, we receive loans of artefact boxes from the museum. The box that we've used in Year 4 is a 'mystery artefacts' box. The artefacts were on display when the children arrived this morning and caused quite a stir! "What is that?" "What would that have been used for?" "That looks so old!" We then spent the afternoon as Historians, investigating what each item could be and what it could have been used for. The historical skills and questioning demonstrated by the children was excellent. They used evidence to support their arguments and thought carefully about how objects have changed over time, and the way society must also have changed alongside this. We plan to open a 'Monday museum afternoon' in the last week of this half term so that the other children can come and see the artefacts as well. Ash Class will be the curators and will be able to explain the items to all of our visitors. Take a look at the photos... do you know what everything is? A fab afternoon to end the week! Have a lovely weekend all. Here is our weekly update from Ash Class.
We've had another busy week here! We felt festive on Tuesday as we designed and created our own Christmas cards. Thanks to the wonderful FONTS, these will be produced into lovely cards which parents and carers can buy and raise lots of money to benefit the children. This week, in English, the children have written their own versions of Meerkat Mail. We had sharks going to stay with other sea creatures, garden birds visiting their eagle relatives, and even bananas visiting their banana family! There were some really creative ideas. In Maths, we've linked our learning to our History topic and have learnt about how Roman numerals work. Every day, we've worked out what the date is in Roman numerals to further embed this learning. Our Roman learning took a look at Boudicca and how she resisted the invasion of Britain. The children are working on some super cartoons to retell the events. In Science, we learnt about the particle structure of solids, liquids and gases. I must say, learning that all matter is made of tiny particles was a bit of a 'mind blown' moment for some! Just a quick reminder to make sure your child is bringing a coat to school every day please. That's all from me now, so have a fab weekend. Miss Radbourne. Another week has flown by.
It felt appropriate this week, on Tuesday, to take some time to think about the events of Monday and the Queen's funeral. As a class, we watched Newsround so children could see some of the key events that happened on the day. They were so respectful whilst watching the footage and asked some really thoughtful and interesting questions afterwards. A momentous occasion in History that I'm sure we'll all remember for a long time. I've been impressed with the children's effort in their learning again this week. In English, they have written some well-thought and entertaining postcards from the perspective of a kitten staying with its big cat relatives. Next week, they have the opportunity to choose their own animals for their postcards. In Maths, we've really delved into our Place Value topic and have been using lots of resources to help with partitioning four digit numbers. We've also spent time learning how to read and use number lines up to 10,000. We're full swing into our History topic and understand why and how the Romans invaded Britain over 2,000 years ago. We have also enjoyed our 2 PE sessions this week, both inside and outdoors. I have sent homework home this week. We ask that your child reads for at least 10 minutes every night, as well as regular times tables and spelling practise. The topic grid is optional so if your child would like to complete one of the activities, they can. My hope is that these activities with enable you and your child to spend some time together discussing what they've been learning in school and thinking more deeply about some topics. Have a lovely weekend. Miss Radbourne Well, we have had a busy week in Ash Class! We've really immersed ourselves into our new topics in all of our subjects.
In Maths, we are starting with Place Value. The children used lot of resources such as place value counters to support their learning. In English, we have read a book called 'Meerkat Mail'. Next week, we will be writing our own version of this as a class where a tiny kitten goes to stay with his big cat relatives! In Science, the children explored what makes a solid, liquid and gas. The Romans have captured some interest in History this week. We learnt how Rome was built then became a republic and finally an empire. We have also enjoyed 2 P.E. lessons this week - see the photos below. A big well done to all of the children for their effort and hard work. I look forward to seeing them again next week, on Tuesday not Monday. Miss Radbourne Welcome back to the academic year of 2022 - 2023. The children have settled really well this week and have been a joy to teach. This week, we have spent time getting to know one another and getting used to our new routines. We have spent the afternoons creatively with some Art activities including creating self portraits and jigsaw pieces about ourselves.
With the sad news today, we have had a sombre end to the week as we felt this was appropriate. The children have taken part in a memorial assembly rather than a praise assembly. We will be observing the national mourning in line with our Trust schools and as age appropriate. Miss Penny will write more about this in her newsletter this week. Take care this weekend everyone. And just like that... another academic year has come to an end! It gets said every year, but this year really does feel like it's flown past. It feels like yesterday we were making Christmas decorations and biscuits!
We've had a great final week with a wonderful trip to the park, a fun game of rounders, some excellent sewing and designing some zoos! Have a look at some final photos of the year below. All that's left to say is a huge thank you. Thank you to the children for all of their hard work this year, to parents and carers for their support at home and a massive thank you to Mrs Squires and Miss Davies for their dedication to supporting the children in school. As you know, Mrs Squires is leaving to enjoy a well earned retirement! We sent her off today with a big card from the class so she will always remember them. She also would like to say a big thank you for all of her cards, flowers and gifts. I know I speak on behalf of both of us when I say we have so enjoyed working with this class and we'll both miss them a lot! I hope everybody has a brilliant, safe and restful summer. Miss Radbourne Here is a quick update about some of this week's highlights and brief look at what next week will look like.
One of the firm favourite activities this week was a visit from Waddle the duck from Year 1. The children all had chance to hold him. It was lovely! We've also been making the most of the beautiful weather and spending time outdoors when we can - on the trim trail, field and playground too. We've been finishing off lots of different things this week including our writing. The children have produced fab A3 sheets about different locations in Chile and some went on to make acrostic poems about Chile too. Move up morning on Thursday was a success and I heard great things about what they got up to in Year 5 - spaghetti and marshmallow towers were mentioned! Next week is the final week of term and there will be lots of fun to be had. It is going to be exceptionally hot at the start of the week so it's really important to wear sun cream, have a sun hat and bring a water bottle to school. |
