Lots more bee bots fun today. We have got very good at drawing detailed maps and programming the bots. We have learnt left and right, 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 turns and clockwise and anti-clockwise. It was tricky to program the bee bot with a string of instructions. Earlier in the week we worked with year three on Scratch programming.
We had a lovely visit to the church today. Reverend Spence showed us around the inside and outside of the church and explained many of the objects and the activities that take place in the church. The children asked some excellent questions. In Maths we had a no pencils lesson. We worked in groups to create a map and to write a program for the bee bot to move around. We use the language of position and direction. We talked about what makes a good team leader. Well done! Have a lovely weekend.

Dear Beech class, What a lovely week we've had! We wrote up our animal stories with Mrs Ahmad, and now all have a book which we are really proud of. We had a lovely trip to Rosemoor which started with a bit of a blip when the coach was 10 minutes late. It was very exciting travelling on the coach, and the children enjoyed spotting windmills, herds of cows and fresh hay bales. Our morning at Rosemoor was spent in the classroom, learning all about how plants grow and potting our own nasturtium seeds. We hunted for interesting leaves and petals through the rose and cool garden. There were many members of the general public who asked us what we were up to and who were impressed with how curious the children were. In the afternoon, we had free time and decided to head through the tunnel to the stumpery and the play area. The giant see-saw was a big hit and the children soon learnt how to work as a group to move it back and forth. It was very special watching the children enjoy themselves and we are very thankful for such super day out! We have continued learning about time in maths, moving onto telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. We looked at number bonds to 60 today and realised that they help us when telling the time 'to' the hour. For example, when the minute hand is pointing towards 35 on the starter clock, the time is 25 to the hour. We also found out that the 5 times table is very helpful when telling the time. Time is very confusing to learn and as grown ups we make a lot of assumptions about what is obvious. When we start looking at misconceptions, a lot of the rules of reading analogue clocks are not obvious at all. Take away the minute markings and adults can still read a clock, but for a child 10 minutes to 2 and 10 past 10 look very similar. (see the example below) In English today, we wrote recounts about our day out. We focused on using time adverbials, adjectives and technical words to structure our writing. I was very impressed that children could explain germination really clearly. Finlay was chosen to be a seed at Rosemoor and other children poured water, soil and provided heat in order to help him grow - this made the learning really memorable for the children! In Science today, we consolidated our Rosemoor trip by recapping the main parts of a plant, germination and pollination. We really enjoyed using cheese puffs to mimic pollen. We finished off the week by having some golden time in the nature area. Have a lovely weekend! Year 2 team Hi everyone,
Apologies for the late blog - it has been a busy few days. Mrs Ahmad and I are so proud of Beech class for completing their SATs tests. Over the week we covered 2 reading papers, an arithmetic and reasoning maths paper. The children were really mature in their approach - trying their hardest but also very relaxed. While the KS1 SATs are no longer statutory, they are very helpful and support us in our assessment of how your child is doing. As well as SATs, we also continued reading analogue clocks. It's very important we are confident reading half past and quarter past/ to as we are soon moving onto telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. If you get a chance over the holidays, please practise this. The format we use in year 2 is "quarter to 7", "half past 9" etc, rather than 6.45 and 9.30. Bringing this in too early will confuse the children if they are not secure at this stage. In Science this week we learnt more about materials. We thought about how to sort materials and worked in teams to think about different ways of sorting. Thinking scientifically (rather than colour, use, size) we grouped into raw and synthetic, waterproof and absorbent and soft/ hard/ bendy etc. It was nice to see the class talking in small groups, taking turns and listening to each others ideas respectfully. In PE, we looked at the difference between jogging, sprinting and running. We learnt that a marathon runner would easily beat us in a 100m sprint race and then carry on running at the same pace for 2 hours to complete a world class marathon time. We jogged around the long track and sprinted along the 100m track. We thought about how our bodies felt when we were jogging and sprinting. We also practised the hurdles, making sure to jump using our dominant leg. Well done Beech class - it's been a fantastic half term. Have a great rest! Year 2 team Hi everyone,
What have we been up to in Beech class this week? In English, we have finished writing our own versions of Tadpole's promise. We followed a repeating pattern of events and key phrases. We thought about how animals change and about broken promises. We have looked at a practise SATs reading paper and talked about some strategies for answering the questions. In Maths, we have been looking at different types of questions ready for our SATS tests next week. We learnt to read the question carefully and underline the key words. We also learnt to double check our answers for small mistakes. With Mrs Ahmad we have been practising how to read the time to the nearest quarter of an hour. One thing to practise before next week is adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers mentally by counting back and forth in 10s and 1s. In Science, we went around the school hunting for natural and synthetic materials. We talked about natural and manmade objects and learnt all about plastics. In Art, we enjoyed working with clay to make models! In PE, we have been comparing jogging and running. We also looked at how to jump, how to run up and land properly. In RE, we carried on talking about forgiveness. Jude made an excellent point that if we don’t get things wrong, we will never learn. Everyone makes mistakes – the important thing is that we are sorry and forgive ourselves and each other. I have sent home quite a lot of homework this week – please don’t panic, as this will be for 2 weeks. If your child would like to do it all before next week, they are SATs style questions and will benefit them before the tests next week. If you would prefer to spread the learning over 2 weeks and half term, then that’s absolutely fine. Have a great weekend! Year 2 team Greetings, Beech Class! It's been quite an exciting week filled with lots of learning. Let's dive into what we've been up to.
In English, we've been reading a lovely story called "Tadpole's Promise". It's all about promises and how things change. We've been thinking about how we change, just like tadpoles turning into frogs. Then, we got creative and planned our own stories using pictures. Our stories had two animals and three broken promises. It was fun to let our imaginations run wild! Math has been all about fractions. We've been learning how to understand fractions better by linking them to food - like when you have a piece of something and want to know how much of the whole it is. We've also been comparing fractions, which means figuring out if one piece is bigger or smaller than another. We finished the week with a quick assessment on fractions. Next week, we will be looking at time and doing some SATs revision. In Science, we've been doing a hands-on experiment. We wanted to know which materials soak up water and which ones don't. It was fascinating to see how different things act when they get wet! We took a trip back in time to Ancient Egypt during history class. With some toilet paper, we pretended to be mummies! It was a fun way to learn about what Ancient Egyptians did with their dead. In Religious Education, we talked about forgiveness using a story about a disciple named Matthew who was a tax collector. We wondered why it can be hard to forgive our friends sometimes but easier to forgive family members. We thought that was because we communicate better with our family and we're more used to having ups and downs with them. We learnt that forgiveness is central to the Christian faith and that we can all be forgiven if we are sorry. In PE, we've been getting active and enjoying the wonderful weather! We've been analysing how our bodies move when jumping and practising running and jumping over sets of mini hurdles. It's been a blast moving our bodies and having fun with our friends. In assembly, we met Frank, who showed us how he lives an active and very positive life with a significant disability. He talked to us about trying our best and being kind to each other. He taught us to celebrate our differences and accept each other for who we are. The children had some excellent questions. Beech Class, you've all been awesome this week. Keep up the great work, and let's keep exploring and learning together! Hello everyone,
It seem incredible that this is the last Friday blog post of this term! Mrs Murch and I would like to start be says a huge thank you to all of the year 2 families for all the support we have received this term; you have all made us feel very welcome here at North Tawton. In class this week, the children have all continued to work hard and do their best, despite it being the last full week of the term. They have been able to show just how much they have been learning in many different aspects of the curriculum. In English, the children have been publishing their non chronological information leaflets on Wolves. They have been learning about how to use subheadings, how to start a sentence in a variety of ways and they have thoroughly enjoyed learning lots of facts and information about wolves. In mathematics, the children have been able to put their recent learning on capacity to the test, with a practical session measuring and investigating different volumes. Again, they all worked very well and showed cooperation and teamwork skills to be able to measure in different ways, as a table team, to solve problems. Finally, the children have really enjoyed art this week. They had to collect various items from around the school with different textures. Then, using their colour mixing skills, they had to use different painting techniques to replicate the various textures. All the children work well with this and showed great focus and enthusiasm with their painting. Well done year 2. Please take the time to look at Class Dojo where you will see some photos of the above take during the week. Wishing you all a very restful and enjoyable weekend. Mrs Murch and Mr Legg Hello everyone,
Year 2 have been working hard this week and there have been several highlights. In English, we have been enjoying our text 'Wolves' by Emily Gravett. The children have been learning all about the features of non-chronological reports and information texts. They have been looking at sub-headings and gathering facts about wolves. The children have also been learning how to gather and organise their information using a spider diagram. In mathematics, the children have been learning about mass and capacity. They have been learning how to read scales and apply this to different questions. This is a perfect area of mathematics to practise and apply at home. If at any point you are cooking and measuring ingredients over the weekend, please encourage your young person to join in and use and apply their learning in this real life context - it'll really help them back in school. Finally, the children have been continuing to develop their gymnastic sequence work, building up their sequence and each week learning new gymnastic elements and looking to improve their body tension and extension. This week, we have filmed the sequences, so that we are able to watch them back before the next session, so that the children can peer assess their work and look to make improvements. We therefore though you might like the chance to see some sequences so far, please remember these are not the finished article! Wishing you all a very restful weekend. The year 2 team. Hello everyone
What a very busy week! The children in year 2 have continued to work very hard and are all doing their best which is great to see. We have started our new English Sequence - Wolves. The children will be learning all about non fiction texts and how to write non chronological reports. In mathematics, everyone has been getting to grips with measure, focusing on units of length; comparing and problem solving. In art we have been exploring primary and secondary colour mixing and carefully looking at how to adjust these for variations of shade, in preparation for a range of painting tasks in the weeks ahead. Moreover, it was super to see so many of you attending the Parent Carer Meetings held this week. The meetings were extremely positive and reflected the children's hard work this term. It was lovely to meet so many of you and we are both very grateful for your support and appreciation. If there is anything further we can do to support your child and you at home with their learning, please do not hesitate to contact us in school. We will be happy to help in anyway we can. We hope you all have a very restful weekend, after such a full week for everyone. Best wishes The year 2 team. Dear all,
It has been a very productive and positive first week back for year 2. It has been super to see the children grow in confidence and maturity over the first half of this term. This is now being reflected in the way in which they are approaching their learning in class. The children have been learning all about and using conjunctions and possessive apostrophes in English; using and applying the 5x table in mathematics; how to locate Uganda on a world map in Geography; and how to develop and improve a gymnastic sequence in PE. The children have especially enjoyed learning about how to apply expression to illustrate a character's feelings as part of their art unit of work: Drawing - Tell a story. You can find some of their work uploaded on Class Dojo for you to enjoy. Finally, thank you to all of you who have booked a time slot for the upcoming Parent Carer meetings next week. If you are still needing to book a time, please contact us and we would be happy to help. Wishing you all a very restful weekend. The year 2 team. Hello Our final week, this half term, has been a very busy one in Year 2. In English, the children have been really enjoying their new text 'The Minpins' by Roald Dahl. This is a classic primary school text which I am sure many of you will know. The children have been working hard writing character descriptions and using the text to develop their vocabulary and words choice. Well done year 2 a super start to our new unit. In mathematics, we have been looking at multiplication and division and children have been learning about arrange of different aspects, including arrays, doubling and halving, and how to use and apply this knowledge. The are doing very well, so please keep practising their times tables over the holiday; this extra support really helps them. Also this week, alongside the other curriculum areas, we have now finished making our whole class story pop-up book (as mentioned last week); I know the children are really proud of the book! We hope you enjoy the pictures of the finished article... Finally, after our first half term, Mrs Murch and I would like to thank: the year 2 families for all their ongoing support since the start of January; the year 2 children for all their hard work and effort over the past weeks; and all the school staff for their help and guidance. We would both like to wish you all a very restful half term break, and we look forward to seeing you all after the holiday. Mrs Murch and Mr Legg |
