I feel really pleased with the children's writing this week. They have worked hard and used their knowledge of Rio de Janeiro to complete 2 pieces of work. First, an information text focussing in depth on one site in Rio. We based this on the book 'A Walk in London' so it became 'A Walk in Rio'. They have also written a diary entry in Geography imagining that they lived in the city. Some of these were really creative! They feature facts about Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana beach and much more.
In Maths, we have been learning about shapes and their properties. Next week, we will be looking at co-ordinates and how to plot on a grid. It is assessment week next week so we will have a reading assessment on Monday, 2 Maths assessments on Tuesday but then that's it. Plenty of fun to be had after that! We will even be doing some Brazilian cooking in D.T... Watch this space as I might be asking to borrow some kitchen equipment please! Have a great weekend everyone. Miss Radbourne. Hello everyone. We've reached the end of another busy week in Ash Class! Here are some highlights...
In Maths, we have been learning all about angles and found lots of examples of right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles in the classroom. At the start of the week, we took our English lesson outside for our very own 'Walk in London' during which the children looked at some of the tourist sites in London and used this to inspire their writing for the day. In the afternoons, we've virtually travelled to another city - Rio de Janeiro - during Geography. The children have worked hard to research and compare life in Rio to our own lives in the UK. We continued our RSE programme with a lesson about some of the physical changes that happen during puberty and the importance of maintaining personal hygiene. Finally, have a look at some of the pictures from yesterday's OCRA Quad Kids Athletics tournament! It was a great morning and lots of fun was had by all. Just a quick reminder that the expectation is that children are reading daily. This could be anything from magazines, newspapers, manuals to cookery books, as well as their reading books. All reading is important! Please record in their reading diaries (children can do this themselves) and just initial so I know you've checked it. Keep practising those times tables too. There are lots of children who are close to moving up on TTRS, let's see how many can next week. Have a fab weekend everyone! Miss Radbourne It's the end of the first week back! This week, we have learnt all about statistics in Maths and the children have been able to read and interpret data from a variety of different graphs. In English, we have read a book called 'A Walk in London' and will be writing our own version called 'A Walk in Rio de Janeiro' using some of our Geography learning.
In PE, we have started Athletics and today did some long distance running and had great fun using javelins. See some photos below. Yesterday, we had our first RSE lesson and learnt the scientific names for all the body parts. We discussed the PANTS rule and listened to a song to help us remember how to keep safe. https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/support-for-parents/pants-underwear-rule/ It looks like great weather for the weekend so have a good one! Miss Radbourne. It's the end of another half term! Is it just me or has this one flown by even more quickly than usual? The weather has finally stopped raining this week so we've been outside again! This time, we were racing the slingshot cars which we made in D.T. After spending 2 afternoons designing, constructing and thinking about how to streamline then, they were ready to go and some travelled quite some distance. The record was set by Alfie at 5m 50cm! Check out some of the photos below.
In English this week, the children finished writing their own versions of Cinderella. There were some brilliantly creative ideas and I really enjoyed reading the stories. In Maths, we finished out unit on time. Keep practising this at home as it's such as a valuable life skill! We have so much to look forward to after half term. I can't believe it will be our last half of term together! Have a great week off. Rest, relax and enjoy yourselves. Best wishes, Miss Radbourne. Well, there was one dry day this week and we managed to make the most of it by taking Science outside. We have been learning about animals so had an invertebrate hunt on the field. The children used classification keys to identify what they found, including ants, worms, slugs, beetles, butterflies and even a centipede (although we didn't count its legs!) We also had a go at making our own classification keys this week.
In Maths, we have started our new topic on 'Time'. The last time the children learnt about time in school was Year 2 (it was an online learning topic in Year 3) so it's especially important they are practising this at home and I have set homework to support this. We've learnt how to tell the time 'to' and 'past' using an analogue clock, digital 12 hour time and digital 24 hour time. The children have worked really hard this week developing our class story 'Cinderella of the Snow'. Their writing has come on in leaps and bounds since the start of the year. We just need to focus on refining it and proofreading thoroughly for spelling and grammar errors. Have a great weekend. It's been another busy week in Ash Class this week! We were lucky enough to enjoy a Space workshop on Tuesday led by Paul at Sirius Academy. The children learnt all about how rockets work and then afterwards, we had a go at making a rocket in a film canister. We have also started a new topic in Science this week called 'Living Things and their Habitats'. So far, we've learnt the life processes 'MRS GREN' and classified vertebrates into the 5 animal groups - mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. Next week, we will learn more about classification keys and invertebrates.
In English, we have looked more closely at some of the techniques the author of 'Cinderella of the Nile' uses including prepositional phrases, adverbials and exciting verb choices. We practised using a thesaurus to improve word choices. We have been working hard in Maths this week to consolidate our learning about money. We've added money, found change from amounts and rounded to the nearest pound. Next week, we start a new unit of work on Time. This is often an area of Maths which children can find a bit tricky so any extra practise at telling the time over the weekend would be great! Thank you. To round off the week, what an array of pyjamas and loungewear we have had in class today! It was lovely to see all the children getting into the spirit of the day and celebrating the joy of reading and the bedtime story. We listened to a great variety of stories read by members of staff and enjoyed every one. It's looking like it might be a wet weekend but have a good one nonetheless! Miss Radbourne What a beautiful day! Ash Class really enjoyed practising their cricket bowling skills in PE today. We’ve had another great week learning about Ancient Egypt in History and have found out all about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Have a look at the photos of some our articles. In Maths, we’ve started learning about money and used our rounding skills to estimate total costs of different items. In English, we have read a story called Cinderella of the Nile which we base our writing on for the next few weeks.
It was also really lovely to see and speak to many of you at the parents meetings. Have a lovely weekend! It's the end of another busy week in Ash Class. This week, the children have written some excellent persuasive letters to Mr Morrow (the new CEO of the DMAT) outlining changes they would like to improve the school. Ask them what they were campaigning for!
We have also had been learning about Ancient Egypt in History and yesterday had great fun learning the process of mummification. The children got to feel some of the 'organs' which I removed from the 'body' ready to make a mummy! Have a look at some of the photos. To round the week off, today we enjoyed taking part in our own Captain Tom 100 challenge to raise money for the Captain Tom Foundation which helps to combat loneliness, champions education and equality, and continues to support the NHS. As a class, we wrote 100 positive messages and collated them into one big positive wellbeing collage. I think that's about it for highlights of the week! Please do remember to message me if you'd like to book a 10 minute Google Meet on Wednesday evening. I will get back to you asap with appointment times. Welcome back everybody. I can't believe it's already the Summer term!
This week, we've started a unit on persuasive writing in English and have learnt about some different techniques used in persuasive writing including questions, talking directly to the reader and using emotive language. We continue our learning about decimals in Maths and we've revisited how to write numbers with tenths and hundredths. In the afternoons, we have enjoyed a Computing unit about editing photos. We've learnt about why photos are edited and whether this is good or not, and we've practised using online editing tools to alter pictures for different purposes. Every day, we've managed to get out for a daily dash to make the most of this beautiful sunshine! Have a great weekend. What a great last week of term we've had. A few highlights include finding out about the water cycle in Science, learning how to debate and discuss different topics in PSHE and also finishing off our own chapters for Bill's New Frock in English. Not only that, but today we managed to squeeze in an Easter egg hunt and enjoy the celebration farewell picnic for Miss Chauhan!
Happy Easter, everybody. Have a great holiday. Miss Radbourne |
